Welcome to the Chadwick Beach Island Bridge Local Preliminary Engineering Website

The Chadwick Beach Island Bridge is an all-timber bridge that was constructed in the 1950s.  Due to its age, many of the load bearing piles and their cross bracing have severe timber rot and section loss.  The bridge’s width and sidewalk do not meet today’s design standards.

Ocean County in coordination with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) are currently conducting Local Preliminary Engineering (LPE) to replace the existing thirteen-span bridge with a three-span structure.  Preliminary Engineering is the second step of the Local Capital Project Delivery Process (LCDP). During the previous Local Concept Development study, an alternatives analysis study was performed, and the preferred alternative was selected. During LPE, the project team is refining the preferred alternative, and securing approval of the Environmental Document in accordance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements.

Community involvement is a vital part of the project. We encourage you to follow and provide input on improvements to the bridge as an important transportation link for the local communities and the region. Get Involved
